Kinda interested in this and Reddit fawning over the premiere, but that often means it's actually woke trash.
I know the show looks like it's going to be just another "racism bad" sermon in a long line of them.

Pretty much what I expected when r television was jerking themselves over it.
Especially since someone mentioned the diner and cop scenes.
They literally had to say nothing else to know exactly how those scenes went down.

I didn’t bother to watch. If this was 10 or 15 years ago I would’ve watched but since HBO seems to have forgotten how to write a show I’m not interested. Plus it’s the Jim Crow south so yet more “racism is bad”
It’s not even trying to make its sledgehammer wholeness believable. question: are American movie makers capable of making movies with black folks without making it all about racism?
I find the view of the past here bizarre. Do they really think that if som black people went to the wrong town in the fifties white people would immediately start shooting? Or that virtually every conversation that black people had was about racism? The “serious” parts were actually unintentionally funny ?
On top of it all, I get the feeling that the writers haven’t read Lovecraft. They mention the author, but the mood of the horror parts is more like various Evil Dead sequels and spinoffs. So I do see why some people find it humorous, although again; that’s partly unintentional.

Maybe they SHOULD have been chased out of towns, and left to their own towns. Which they could all turn into Detroit, so there'd be no "they're just like us" bullshit.
("But Detroit is doing better now!" Me: checks who the mayor is, and sees that it's a white guy for the first time in 40 fucking years. Uh-huh. Also notices that the legacy of Hizzoner Coleman A. Young seems to have been memory-holed.)
Depends on how you define "good". It is pure woke crap, but it's so retartedly bad that it's actually hilarious and quite entertaining in that manner.

HBO will keep cranking out woke series that are parasitically attached to existing licenses or IPs because that's the only way they can trick people into watching. It's all awful diversity hire writing and directing that can't survive on its own without being propped up by a built-in fan base.
Watched it and it’s pretty bad, the more I think about it the more it breaks down
I found a plot synopsis for the novel online and basically the formula here is gonna be “1950s racism was REALLY BAD guys, here’s a spooky monster/ghost and it’s gonna kill the racists so the black people can get away”. That’s how EVERY episode will go.
Jordan Peele made sure to say that he didn't have any interest in casting white people for his properties going oh, so even if it was well done and not a sermon I still wouldn't watch it.
I bought the book a while back on Amazon because it was a Kindle deal of the day. Read the first chapter and it was about what I expected in the first several pages - Jim Crow South, white people being assholes to the black protagonist, racism in the North, and a lot of scorn heaped on the white sci-fi authors of the 40s and 50s. While indicative of the times and the troubles black people faced, it's not a huge jump to figure that HBO turned it into woke garbage. I'll be finishing the book, but I won't be watching the adaptation, even ironically.
I bet South Park treated the mythos better. Cartman didn't go insane when he beheld Cthulhu because he's already there.
I've never watched a worse movie on HBO. It's total crap. Apparently Google is hiding all the negative reviews. I mean, even some of the better programs get negative reviews. You can't find one on this shit series. All reviews are glowing talking about how remarkable this shit is.
There really is nothing redeeming about it. Not just the woke stuff (which it's full of). It's a terrible script..over-acting, completely predictable plastic characters. The scenes that are "supposed" to be dramatic and mood-setting are just awkward and weird. The special effects and monsters are ridiculous. They play music that is just all over the fuckin' place. 20's jazz followed by modern rap, followed by old Blues..just constantly droning over scenes for no apparent reason. Tuti Fruti just started playing over a scene with a bunch of campy gay black folks dressing up in drag. This followed a scene that had the main character's dad boning some new character (can't even tell you how he stumbled into the scene)..about 5 minutes of doggy-style. No apparent reason for that random and needlessly graphic scene. It's hard to explain the level of failure every part of this show is.
And, yeah, the racist stuff is just so inane. In this scene I just watched a black lady keep changing into a white lady because this contrived "white wizard" (not KKK..just your normal run of the mill wizard like Gandalf I suppose) stole her soul and now has her meta morphing like a butterfly (you just have to except the freaky premise and theory the wizard gives that conveys rationale for it all) . Her original black for awhile then white..then black. Always when she's white there are all the White Privileges just thrown in her lap.
For example, the first time she turns white she's running down the street in a black neighborhood bumps into this young black boy and knocks popcorn out of his hand. The cops just coincidentally pull up at that exact moment and start beating on the black kid. Asks the now "white woman" if "that animal hurt you". It's so fucking insane.
The worst part, I have to watch it with my wife (who seems to love it for some reason) and pretend I like it. I'm the best fucking actor in the whole room.
