To be fair to Stalin, he did need to purge people. You can't have all these immoral opportunistic violent psychopaths running around with actual power. They had to be stopped. He was just a wee bit heavy handed.
I'd say the big failing of Stalin was he didn't kill enough communists, not that he killed too many.
