Its not present day, but based in a Persian city after the invasion of Ghengis Khan and the Mongols. Its still airing so I cant be sure of the ending but based on the style and what people who read the manga have said its probably depressing. Still, very interesting premise, and more prude friendly given the setting.

I watched the first episode. The show simps heavily for Islam and portrays muslim slavery as wholesome. It feels like sand nigger propaganda aimed at Japan.
Great animation though.
Same as the simping for Christianity in the European set animes. In either case that all breaks down when the Mongols arrive. But its a kids show so don't expect much visible violence, and definately not rape though that was the norm.
I don't know what you've been watching, but almost every anime that involves a church has that church being secretly evil, or at least a morally gray mafia.
