She does ask him point blank if he likes her in the movie. He could have left the friend zone without the wish, if he had the guts to say yes I like you.
I haven't seen the film just read the synopsis, holy fuck I have little compassion for the guy in that as unlike the stonetoss comic he goes full 'love me more than anything in the world'
Like we have grand discussions on the perfect wishes, how to counter genies, you had a perfect wishing tool and you create the perfect self sabotage and I feel more sorry for her being taken over by a psychopathic yandere.
