I think the CRS and similar agencies are running this trial to ensure that he is convicted. They sense that now is a precarious time for their agenda, and they can't have a racially-motivated verdict threatening to kickstart a cascade.

Letting him go free ESPECIALLY when they see in the UK even though the killer was convicted and this case is so clear cut, would be too risky so he's worth more sacrificing than saving..
