The US originally wanted to lean the UN to it's hegemony by supplying the facilities the UN required, the fact the UN headquarters is in New York shows this as well as providing a lot of funding for it's agencies.
The communists realised they couldn't compete to the same level so rather than fund ALL of it, they just targeted key people whether through bribes like China or indoctrination like the Soviet Union.
The best thing America can do is just pull funding. Do that, the UN starts to crumble as already seen with how much the WHO is panicking over budget shortfalls. China can't provide enough to take over and the people it bribed won't be able to provide the same support.
