Some people like the Japanese style "you never know the day" thing. Keeps them on their toes. Lets them stew in it for a bit.
I'm with you, and we've got too many to be dealing with, but I'm an open minded person with appreciation for the ways of other cultures, there's something to be said for the Japanese way.
Same reason for keeping a person alive and in prison. Death is too easy an escape. And he should watch his children suffer what he decided was good enough for strangers to suffer.
