Sure, the guards at the first checkpoint were caught flat-footed and looked like they were bored af but in the end security proved effective. Designing total security around the idea that not all security personnel will be effective individually but that overall the security will be effective is actually well-designed security. If you need all security personnel to be on 100% alert at all times, then you haven't designed good security.

That's the point I'd make. That the agents right at the gate missed isn't surprising, they were surprised and were shooting at a guy running at them.
I don't think that bathroom right outside the metal detectors should have been open, but that is a procedural thing.
