I don’t think we were whipped like a lot of people think, but instead we’ve got too many military and press members that have gotten high off the Ukraine supply for four years and assumed Russian SAMs are automatically a nonissue, leading to air operations that are flying over airspace protected by modern mobile Russian AA operated by IRGC who actually want to fight back (unlike Venezuela). They don’t want to risk losing an F-22/35 over Iran and it being shipped back to Russia or China which automatically means risky missions are being undertaken by very vulnerable aircraft. Plus, the US’ magic hack invisibility aircraft are all surveillance based (I imagine the black triangle that is spotted once every year or so which is rumored to have a plasma-magetic levitation engine was over Iran).
Furthermore, the blatant ignorance to the drone threat also seems to be based of the assumption from early in the Russian invasion of Ukraine that only an army of idiots is vulnerable to drones, while ignoring how the Russians were forced to change their approach to war, same with the Ukrainians. Apparently we thought suicide drones were something that wouldn’t happen to us. Hubris, man.
We were super whipped, and the Ukraine-Russia conflict was clear foreshadowing on how any extended war with Iran would go, and it did. Actually it's worse than people thought, since everyone, even neo-con generals, weren't stupid enough to think war with Iran was a good idea.
The reason for the failures are obvious, but in the end they didn't even have bunkers for the mostly destroyed foreign bases, incredibly expensive (in both dollars and rare earth materials) and strategic radars were annihilated both by ballistics and slow drones, and the death of the petro-dollar has been turbo-accelerated in favor of the Yuan both by Iranian tolls as well as new Chinese alliances as result of American impotence.
Of course, things could be worse but that's only because the escalation ladder is currently paused. Even nukes cannot salvage this situation.
