It's not like there's much to bastardize, From Software did a good enough job of that themselves. Outside of the cookie cutter bosses, copy and paste dungeons, Breath of the Wild inspired open world, and Ubisoft collect-a-thon, even the lore is mediocre and a shell of itself compared to the likes of Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and even Dark Souls II. It's normie slop, there's nothing there to ruin.
It’s a fine game that excels at providing a feeling of exploration, but it really needs some major tuning and changes for the FS game design (outside of combat) to be as well made as their other games.
I fully disagree, it's mediocre. It looks good in comparison to everything we get now because the game industry does nothing but produce a pile of shit. Even if From and Kadokawa aren't openly hostile or spiteful towards their audience and doesn't spit in your face doesn't make it a good game. Especially in comparison to From's previous works, it's thoroughly mediocre.
I think a lot of the issues are with it being an open world. I know towards the end I just wanted to get done with it and haphazardly ran through a bunch of dungeons and basically the entire snowy area minus the castle in it. I never felt that way in all three DS games and Demon Souls doesn’t let you do that strategy.
That's because they broke a working game design to shove it into an open world. Miyazaki is probably the best level designer alive, and what does he do, creates a game with no fucking levels.
