Are the desktops that bad? I had 2 as a kid (one bought in 03 and the other bought in 09) and I didn't have any hardware problems that I recall. I was told by the Best Buy salesman not to get a Dell laptop in 2010 but I don't how knowledgeable he was or if there were other motivations for saying that. Come to think of it I don't think I've ever had a Dell laptop and I was burning through laptops yearly at one point.
For a few years there in the late 90s they also had power supplies with non-standard power pinout but with a standard ATX connection, such that if you tried to swap their broken unit for a standard unit off the shelf it would fit perfectly but literally fry the motherboard.
Yeah but it's Dell. I don't want my computer catching fire.

Don't know about their desktops besides the shitty low end micro PCs you can find in every office building everywhere, and yes those suck.
But they've had a reputation for twenty years for purchasing cut rate power supplies and starting fires.

Evil bastards.
