Having to write a sequel to TOS fifteen years later, in the midst of some extreme technological leaps and political changes, is obviously going to take some work. NuTrek has no excuse. TV isn't new, tech has slowed down significantly, and they've got decades of storytelling to work off of. Even if it was true that NuTrek only sucks because of the mythical season 1 curse, it would still be a much bigger failing on their part.
