Oh, never do that - people are either stupid or untrustworthy. But my understanding is that these are Iranian funds that were frozen by US financial institutions or at US orders. Just like they did with $300 billion of Russian reserves. Obviously, the US isn't going to pay Iran to make a deal. That's just preposterous, but the Fixed Noise viewers will believe anything. Only Egypt gets money for making a deal, and that is because that deal benefits Israel.

The equipment was never delivered, and the U.S. froze the funds. $1.3 billion was the negotiated interest accrued over nearly 40 years. U.S. lawyers argued that settling was better than risking a much higher ruling (potentially billions more) from an international tribunal at The Hague. Because of existing sanctions and the lack of a SWIFT banking relationship, the $400 million was delivered in physical pallets of foreign currency (Euros and Swiss Francs) on an unmarked plane.
