Physiognomy is real and how you present yourself matters. They tried really hard to push the "never judge a book by its cover" idea on us as kids.

Perhaps "appearance isn't everything but it's an extremely useful heuristic for making advance judgements on people as many behaviors and ideologies manifest in one's appearance" is too complicated for children. Or the more likely option that it's intentional propaganda. Yeah I'm gonna go with that one.
