Less than 5% of the New-Zealand population speak it to some extent.
Only 1% can speak it well or very well, mostly older people who are basically illiterate.
But kids who go to Maori-language schools long enough can read it, that would be maby 5% of teenagers.
It has a similar status as Scottish Gaelic : cherished as a cultural heritage that very few parents actually use at home with their kids.
