One would hope! I'm not so sure. I think a lot of people caught up in this are in it because they're having a good time, and a dash of martyrdom here and there only increases the fun. It's not real to them until literally their last nanosecond before death, or maybe when they're on the ground with their arms pinioned, or perhaps with a snout full of pepper spray.
Self-preservation as an imperative--or even a priority--is not currently a popular menu item.
