She has lived in Canada her whole life and is White. She asked me if it were possible to own a building without owning the land that the building was on and I explained how it is and that's how many properties on Indian land are setup. I then went in to say, it's not that common of a setup outside of Indian land as far as I know but apparently, it's fairly common in NYC according to Trump's book. She scowled almost immediately. "You read Trump's books?" I told her I did because I like to stay informed about things and it was actually a pretty good book that was written well before his political days that mostly focused on the real estate side. I told her I read Mark Carney's book also. "Who's that?" She replied. "You don't know who the Prime Minister of Canada is?" "I guess not because I don't know who that is" she replied.
And Canadians like to pretend they're more informed than Americans.
Most can't. Legitimately unable to read 8th grade and up material.
And thats just a canadian thing? America isnt any better. And maybe your blaming the wrong people here, the students? Or the system that was built to screw them for life in the first place? I get confused trying to keep up sometimes.
It's a feedback loop.
Teachers don't get respect so they do a bad job. The kids they teach don't get respect so they disrespect the adults in their lives. Their parents get disrespected by their own kids and bitch at the School Board which implments some top-down, totally useless solution on teachers.
Anyone could break the cycle, but no one does.
Plenty of people do break it down. Plenty of people have an interest in something and learn it, mostly via reading online etc. The problem is the majority are retarded and just read memes and scroll slop.
What about amurrica. We are talking about Canadians right now, do you need me to caveat every comment with a reference to the USA?
I blame the students because you can read a book. Many young people are highly literate despite poor education. You can basically access reading material on any subject for free, it's just laziness for most people. I'm lazier now too as most reading I do is just video games and internet commentary.
[whistles nonchalantly]
Haha classics definitely separate literacy from comic book reading level
