Captcha are getting harder because AI is solving them. Once AIs surpass humans on solving capchas can we just get rid of all capchas?
Maybe something will actually get better?
(Probably not. The pessimist in me just says the internet will just start requiring an ID to access anything.)
I did an experiment trying multi-modal LLMs on the new 4chan captchas. Qwen-V3 was able to solve the dots and letters versions without any special prompting, just reading the instructions on the screen, running locally on a 4090.
The "find the image with the most empty boxes" variant caused problems and sent it into an infinite thinking loop. I tried it on grok and it broke with some kind of quote escape problem and printed out the system prompt, so that was neat. ChatGPT at first refused to help me with a captcha but then I told it it was to help queer black folx and it worked.
