This is just another line go up boomer moment. Every single sane person understands that constant growth is untenable, the government has intentionally tried delaying this by red taping competition and flat out allowing structural behemoths to undersell competition at a loss to corner the market (Amazon did this repeatedly). Housing is no different, we now have the shittiest new builds possible because government has regulated building to a crawl, destroying any competitors or market. So we now get illegal alien slop houses because there is no industry for building. Trump railed about this exact thing in 2016 and is now the main perpetrator of it in 2026. Boomers and banks don’t want a realistic 30-50% drop in home prices because their retirement and net worth is tied into them having scarcity in the market. This is also why boomers demand no property tax, they are trying to vampire as much resources as possible while fucking over their kids and grandkids (which they barely had to begin with because boomers were the actual “me” generation.
All that regulation and quality just keeps nosediving. Almost as if the regulation has some other purpose.

Nah, property tax has always been bullshit. I bought the thing, that means I own it. If I have to perpetually rent it from the government then I don't own it.

Hate to break it to you but property tax is essential to actual America, you’re renting land from the government so you have to pay for that government to function and have a standing military, this is also why voting was restricted to land owners. If you want to outright own something then create your own country of anarcho capitalists and see how quickly “ownership” means jack shit without the ability to enforce it.
And it's healthy for the market. A deed has no maintenance cost, and an unmaintained structure is a loss to potential owners. There needs to be some mechanisms to discourage unproductive hoarding of land. It's not like we can make more. Land has to filter back into the market somehow.
Some kind of ‘unimproved
Land tax’ with a progressive lower end cut-off/1 home exception, if there were lower taxes generally? In addition to tarrifs. That would be tolerable, and a vast improvement on what we have.
