"It is not normal to want a large family."

Well considering up until fairly recently most children died before they hit their teens it's not all that surprising. Plus, in ye olden times children were free labor to help out at home or earn a living. There's a reason most civilised countries have child labor laws after all.

Besides, if you treat your kids right and don't raise them to hate you, then you'll have someone to care for you in your old age. Much better to have someone who already loves you and has known you all their life to watch over you than some random nobody in a nursing home. If you have multiple kids, you can have them all take turns taking care of you.

And if your kids have children of their own, you'll be able to give them some advice or take some of the load off their shoulders by keeping your grandkids busy.
