economic migrants take advantage of so much you don't have to give them directly. clean water. electricity. stocked stores. functioning government and healthcare. school systems. emergency systems. safety. the quiet. roads. clean air. trust between strangers. logistics networks. business relationships. so many intangible things.
You are correct that taking the money away will not self-deport the hordes, but it would take out a massive chunk.
You need benefits or some type of income to access most of those things. South Americans have worked in Texas for over a century, but they didn't take it over earlier because Americans would periodically shut down their job opportunities. In the last 40 years, however, Texas and California have been swamped. What changed? Free healthcare with Medicaid and the emergency room, free food, free income just for existing. Even free education with public school for their kids and easy college loans. Plus a neverending supply of wages because our ag sector insists illegals are the saviors of farming.
Then there's the massive giveaway of free capital to Indians to allow them to take over our service industry. If Indians had to face the same credit scrutiny as natives, we would be looking at a completely different picture. We underestimate the difference between the First and Third world, but we also severely underestimate the amount of money our government has given away to destroy us.
Another thing is that people are truly more psychologically comfortable in their native surroundings, even if that means a hole in the ground. You hear this occasionally when you talk to migrants. For example, the Afghan who did suicide by cop recently (not the NG shooting) ranted on bodycam about how nothing in the country works for him and how America forced him to come here. Guy was in a nice area but it was a bunch of people with much better stuff than him (while he drives a beater that he can't even insure) and there's no other Afghans around.
If Americans would stop being so arrogantly complacent and accept that some people need to face some very hard times to stop ripping us off, half the US Hispanic population would be gone.
