Two year old article. Star Wars games collection getting a physical edition
Guild Wars 1 has been online for over 20 years and was being maintained by like one dude for the last decade, for the cost of a rounding error for the parent company. It even did well enough that that guy got around to getting a small team and then did a "reforge" in his spare time. We'll see how well it goes next week when it drops, but it looks solid.
Point being, if the server costs that much to run you fucked up to begin with. And having played Ubisoft games recently, its because they are so terminally "always online" and checking in with the server that of course its way more work.
In all industries, when you give people guaranteed money you get subpar products. Epic was literally trying to bribe people into their ecosystem, and in return they got fleeced as the "free money for early access" and "game that would never sell much anyway" suckers.
Retro gaming has become like Vinyl music. Where entire industries exist just to provide the most "authentic" experience with the old technology. Its not something meant for casual consumers any longer, its for pretentious faggots or guys with too much money to act superior about. Shit my local mall has two retro gaming stores and the only modern gaming store is the section in Target, and both of those stores are basically the same handful of guys hanging around talking about the same things for days.
Anyone who wants to play the actual game will probably just emulate it or pay for the one broken part from their childhood setup.
There is a really big classic indie industry happening now. What started as a hobby has become a demand for new cartridges to be made and CRT for the experience. Yeah, it's for the rich now, bit I wouldn't be surprised if it got a bit bigger.
The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is so big and has so many people trying to make money it's hard to do what the hobby was originally for. So many want that copy do Dicky Tracy to be worth something.
It literally can't. Until the companies themselves decide to either start releasing or free the IP to the market. Which they seem to prefer releasing "digital classics" instead, sans the rare "SNES Mini" thing. We are limited to the dwindling original supplies, and the "technically illegal" recreations.
And then, as you said, the rich people trying to make money off it driving prices beyond anything approachable for what originals do exist still.
It could change, but it would need considerable change from the industry themselves to make it happen and they seem completely uninterested unless they retain full control over it all. Only Xbox seemed different, in their big backwards compatibility push, but they are basically dead.
You should check out Atari Age and the others. Or, check out tomorrow what I post about Classic Indies.
