They keep calling it a "complicated issue" and backing off because muh religious freedom, when in reality all they have to do is reassert that the separation of church and state must be recognized and that a religion taking over duties of the state (such as law enforcement) will not be tolerated and groups assembled by it do so should be considered vigilante organizations.
