Forgive the reference, but in the 7th Harry Potter book, there's a mythical object called the "Resurrection Stone" that was said to bring the dead back to life. Instead of actually reviving them, it simply created a shade of that person, and because you could never truly touch them or be with them meaningfully, it drove the "user" mad and made them kill themselves.
