Technically he got killed for who he knew to be involved but could have saved himself if he involved Trump.

My guess is they planed on killing him more so after involving Trump and he knew it. His best chance of surviving was to side with Trump except Trump had no real power in his first term. Everyone around him was a swamp creature and the FBI was working against him at the time.

Him involving Trump and then getting suicided would have been the perfect outcome for democrats.
