The former is usually considered morally worse due to malice aforethought. It's probably an academic difference to the family and loved ones of the dead. Why?

If an immigration advocate was killed publicly in front of his family I wouldn't be shedding any tears and you can bet your ass I'd be making fun of it for years to come along with antagonizing everyone who was against the killing.
