The console wars died with the 360, and anything beyond that was more people memeing it up over it being a legitimate debate.
Anyone who cared about console gaming bought a PS4, except for normies so casual that they couldn't give a shit about the "war" in any sense other than crossplay with their bros. All Xbox had going for it was momentum of "its what I always had" and its huge push for backwards compatibility making all your old games run on the new console, which was a great move.
What is going on with current gen, if anything?
We are just in the last year or so reaching the point where major games aren't still releasing on the PS4 along with the PS5, so the number of actual reasons to buy one is still minimal.
Gears is unironically a game you play for the story. The bro dynamic of the main team during the original 3 games and the payoffs of their storylines are legitimately great, with plenty of good moments in between. Its truly a lost genre of "macho men being macho but still hurting" without feeling like its trying to beat you in the head about toxic masculinity and other politics.
That and its never meant to be played solo. Its a splitscreen game all the way.

All Xbox ever had was Halo and Gears. and I think Gears sucks.
