So we've had self scanning here in Sweden for like 25 years and cashiers are still a thing.
This was introduced way before self checkout, which is more common in medium sized stores where people just do their daily shopping and not their big weekly hauls.
It works by just using your membership card and you would get a scanning gun that you would return on exit. It's mostly found at big supermarkets.
Nowadays though you can just use an app to scan the barcodes and tap to pay on exit. Saves them on equipment costs and people stealing or forgetting to return the scanning guns.

I'm sure it worked great for the first 5-10 years before the tide of Arabs and Somalis.
They don't really have cars to go shopping with and stores near them don't really offer self service anything.
