Sometimes I wonder if "the left used to be edgy countercultural radicals and the right were the uptight morality police!" thing is a meme. People like Al Goldstein were certainly subversive to the mainstream (White Christians), but wanting to prevent the sort of moral decay you see everywhere today is hardly pearl-clutching.
