Having not checked the link, let me guess: former lead singer of Lost Prophets being stabbed to death in prison 12 years into his 29 year sentence?

Yup.
He was attacked a few years back as well, so I don't think it was for lack of trying by the other inmates.
Usually these dudes can minimize themselves and avoid most conflict.
Sometimes they get so mentally broken that they start getting suicidal and then outing themselves and constantly saying sick shit to whoever will listen just to provoke an attack.
Dahmer mostly ended up like that.
Protective custody, even self-admiting in solitary confinement, or medical separation. There are multiple ways to protect yourself, especially after you are attacked. The prison panel decided he was safe enough to get back into general population only for someone to tell him the dreaded 5 words for any prison pedo: “Let me see your papers.”
