I think this made him feel untouchable and like he doesn't need to be accountable to his fans, and that he should actually double down. I think a lot of the Saudi outrage in general is performative and hypocritical tbh, but it's a mainstream opinion and when you combine it with him selling out (which is a mortal sin for the left) he's in deep shit. Theres probably plenty of people who aren't political or online much who don't really care, but I also think he's become less funny and likeable over the years as he's got into politics and with no real dedicated fan base he's going to be hurting bad.
