I came across an article where the lady who is in charge of the upcoming Supergirl movie said that the character is "too optimistic" and she wants something dark and gritty. I know it is beating a dead horse to ask "Then why don't you make your own stuff if you don't care to research and respect the source material", but this is just a small symptom of a massive problem.
I remember a normie friend calling me a nerdy snob because I refused to watch the Obi-Wan show due to the showrunner saying it was a priority to have Leia in it along with other stuff (I had already cancelled Disney) or I was told I was making a mountain out of a mole hill when I thought it was dumb in the 3rd season of Stranger Things to set up that guy and girl in the ice cream store to be a couple only for her to say she is a lesbian.
Like I said, this is all a symptom of a bigger issue but I do think it is a little sad that this is what I come to expect. Dark and gritty can be good every now and then, but would it kill modern entertainment to make something uplifting and hopeful? I know it may be sappy but I still enjoy watching old episodes of Leave it to Beaver or Little House and seeing the family unit celebrated.
There are MOUNTAINS of really good anime that are utterly wholesome, uplifting and entertaining too!
Happy Sugar Life NO! I lie, it's dark and gritty. REAL darkness, REAL grit! It's also one of the best stories I've seen in ages. It shoves the brutality right in your face, but you'll care for the MC girl so much by the end. Probably.
Over The Moon For You It's SO pure! Wholesome, funny and fun to watch. 2 seasons and some specials, it's terrific.
Miss Komi Cannot Communicate is heartwarming, meaningful and often touching in its depiction of school life for a boy & girl who happen to meet one day. The side characters are full of fun too! Miss Komi cannot be more adorable.
Bocchi The Rock! 8.75 rate = massive hit! And worth every accolade. You come to know Bocchi & her friends so well & their ordinary lives are woven into your heart!
Quick hits: They may not be "for everyone" for various reasons.
One Week Friends A girl who only remembers things until Sunday, then the last week is gone. After 1 full year she can remember, so how will this boy make her his girlfriend? Why is she like that? A little slow at times, kind of 'obvious' now and then. But wholesome & heartwarming with a fantastic conclusion.
My Tiny Sempai An office comedy-romance. Nothing spectacular but it's wholesome & very funny.
Akebi's Sailor Uniform Akebi's an unusual girl, and the story of her first year of high school is far from 'normal'! With a solid family backing her, she lives her dream & makes so many friends! Wholesome, but it delves into various "fetishes" these girls have in a non-ecchi way. Yuri undertones and amazing art!
I got more, but gotta go!
Do It Yourself! was surprisingly funny. Very heartwarming stuff.
Helpful Foxgirl Senko-san is legendary for wholesomeness! And has some plot too.
Both have some romance 'undertones' but that's just some yummy strawberries on the cake!
