They realize if they adopt a brown kid people will immediately recognize that she is an altruistic great super person who went out of her way to adopt a kid, and not just any kind but a down and out ethnic. They don't for the social points they think they earn from others.
They don't realize that everyone just thinks they are retarded and that they're probably unworthy of being parents anyways. But in their mind they're the main character and everyone is in awe of their magnanimity.
Btw you also see this with western organizations and even Christian organizations. Some church group from Vermont will abscond alllllll the way to some far off land in Africa or South America to help impoverished people there and completely that o lying a few hours driving distance further down the Appalachian mountains they live in, fellow whites are struggling in abject poverty. But you don't get brownie points for helping whites.
