A leftist committed a heinous act of political violence against a conservative. Overwhelming public consensus is that this act was indefensible and reflected very poorly on leftism.
It would be very good for leftism, in this moment, if conservatives were considered to be equally violent.
It would be very bad for leftistm, in this moment, if conservatives were considered to be significantly less violent.
Therefore, conservatives are equally violent. Because that is the conclusion that is beneficial for leftism. The end.
This is how leftists process reality. They choose a comfortable and beneficial conclusion, and then they ignore all contradictory evidence that might invalidate it.
"Processing reality" is a bit of a generous descriptor but, yes, you're completely correct.
Except, in the leftist view of things, the right is not equally violent, they're much more violent. And the left isn't violent at all. Ignore all the leftist violence, that's neither here nor there. It's the right that's violent.
It's all so tiresome.
It's more like, the left projects themselves on to others. They are evil and want to cancel and kill everyone so they assume everyone else is wants to cancel and kill everyone. The left assumes the right cheats in elections because the left actually does cheat, And they assume everyone else is just as shitty as they are.
