Empathy is a therapy term they learned, and like almost everything involved in therapy they take it to use as a self-serving thing that just means they are "better" than you who doesn't have it, instead of a real thing that means something and requires work to have.

Its like those who go to Church and think because they wear a cross they are now morally superior as they drink and whore around.
