We've seen that Nuclear has been hamstrung by critical failures of archaic technology being paraded around like the norm. I'd totally buy that the powers that be are stifling superior techniques to prop up their status quo.
I just think that it's also an easy field to be a snake-oil salesman in and use the government's blanket oppression as free advertising to prop up a fake product.
