I don't think that's a good comparison. If the Texas ranchers had serious issues with feral hogs destroying their property and then despite that decided to breed them to charge people for hunting them and once people lost interest they just let the hogs go free and cause even greater property damage for the ranchers then it would be an accurate comparison.
