This has been the case for years now, but it still boggles my mind. Gaming is an overwhelmingly male hobby. 90% of the people playing enthusiast level video games are male. Yet the clear majority of protagonists in these products are female.
New resident evil? Female protagonist.
New Ghost of Tsushima? Female protagonist.
New Hollow Knight? Female protagonist.
New Silent Hill? Female protagonist.
New World of Warcraft expansion? Female protagonist.
And that’s just the biggest trailers of the night. Gay ass indie is almost entirely female (or queer coded) characters.
Is there another industry that hates its own core customer base this much?
I mean A LOT of these were probably developed BEFORE the USAID/DEI well ran dry so were developed in advance.
NOW it's whether they can ADAPT as a female protagonist doesn't have to be bad depending on how she is written, voice acted and presented.
3 of those have a SLIGHT chance to be redeemed. WoW is fucked since their last one apparently had magic wheelchair...
Don’t misunderstand - silent hill f and resident evil requiem are still using conventionally attractive white/Asian women, and silksong is literally about bug people. All three games are likely to be good or decent. But they all still contribute to an overall trend of almost every video game protagonist being female while the vast majority of players are male (and would choose male avatars).
I mean it depends on the story to me, there's some were simply put, a man wouldn't fit.
Top of my head, Heavenly Sword, a flawed but I enjoyed it game, would not work with a male protagonist. While flipside, you can just look at the latest COD trailer to see 'overly masculine female soldier' DOESN'T work.
This is just like with Blacks in media, the left have so tainted it with forcing it into stories that don't support their presence, it taints their inclusion completely.
