We're at the stage where judges and prosecutors use excessive sentences to try and stop the rising tide of vigilanteism. The next inevitable step in our societal rot is for vigilantes to start taking exception to those high sentences and taking action to discourage them.
A fair and impartial system the people trust will discourage that simply by existing, yes. Shame we don't have one of those. And so, instead of showing vigilanteism is unnecessary by demonstrating fairness, they'll show that it is extremely risky by placing vigilantes on an even lower tier of "justice".
