I'm not particularly fond of the Soviets, but I'm glad they opposed that.

I know a bit of Japanese (only the basics you'd get in a classroom), do you happen to know how/in what way they simplified the characters? Was it like the simplified Chinese deal where they removed meaningful components to simpler but meaningless strokes?
