they were probably seeing Japanese politics the same way as they see American politics. As in the LDP is "the right wing party " and the opposition party CDP as the "left wing party" similar to "Republicans vs Democrats" in America.

. When in reality most of Japan's political party rivalries happen within the ruling LDP party itself . The LDP has always been a big tent centrist party with different internal factions. The party's politics changes depending on which faction of the LDP party is in control .

If people are not happy with LDP its because they are not happy with the faction that is currently in control of the LDP. and currently that faction is leftist. LDP lost popularity because right wingers don't feel represented by LDP.
