Gen Z is increasingly slamming their degrees as useless, and new research indicates there may be some truth when it comes to the job hunt. In fact, the unemployment rate of males aged 22 to 27 is roughly the same, whether or not they hold a degree. It comes as employers drop degree requirements and young men ditch corporate jobs for skilled trades. Gen Z is struggling to break into the entry-level job market—but young male college graduates may be hurting the most.
This is exactly what happens as AI and H1Bs gobble up jobs from both ends, but I automatically distrust the Mike Rowe contingent that acts like skilled trades are the promised land. There is no boom sector like we had with tech in the 2010s.
The important thing about trades is that those are the skills which are critical for building a society from the ground up. If you're comparing jobs in a stable economy then there may be better arguments for other things, but if you're considering the full spectrum of potential challenges we may encounter, the trades are invaluable.
Trades in my area pay middling wages and are generally filled to the brim with immigrants. Just like every other job sector.
What's the quality of work they're doing?
Average at best. Usually to whatever standards of the country they are from.
