Yuzuru Hanyu is a Japanese figure skater and considered the best figure skater in the world at the moment. if you watch his performance you can see why he's even considered the best of all time to some people https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23EfsN7vEOA (the video has 41 million views)
He's popular even in China and his fans say its not just because of his good ice skating but also because of his good personality. He once helped a Chinese figure skater flip the Chinese flag the right way round when he noticed he was holding it the wrong way round by accident.
And here's the funny thing. The guy is a Japanese nationalist. Maybe even an ethno nationalist. The media doesn't talk about it. But he has said in past interviews that he is "proud that he has typical Japanese facial features" and he's also said that he wants to get married to a Japanese woman and that he's not fond of foreign women"(it was a while ago he said this but still)
And yet he is still very popular worldwide and his fans are basically a cult. He has tons of fangirls worldwide.
Its interesting isn't it? Would any fictional show ever depict a nationalist character like this?
Someone who is straight up an ethno nationalist who says he's proud of his own ethnic genetic features and who says he prefers to marry within his own race, and yet still has good relations with foreigners, (his coach is a White Canadian).
Instead all nationalists in media are depicted as and steriotyped as "rude, dumb, and closed minded people with bad personalities that behave like cartoonish disney villains against all foreigners. "
Japan already has Hate Speech Laws in some cities now. So ethno nationalists are definately not publically accepted in Japan either
