It doesn't even have to have contemporary political undertones, I hate this loud slice of life American comedy subgenre, and who it appeals to. In Dumb and Dumber it is assumed the protagonists are obnoxiously different. There's some Poe's Law going on, where the vapid mannerisms of sitcom, romcom, etc characters no longer had a neon sign, and audiences related more to it.
