The word “reliable” stands out in this statement. If it means reliable to PMO/government, it’s concerning. If it means there is a body who decides who’s reliable, that’s a problem. “Defining and defending Canadian values” is another red flag. There are no guidelines a PM can place on media.
They can’t tell media which stories are not meeting Canadian values under a free press.
Another important part not mentioned in the statement is social and independent media and its major footprint today. No matter who wants to regulate or censor it, it’s a factor. In many cases, no corporate or government funded news groups have the same or more viewers and followers. The smaller, on the street type, players have many supporters too but most important they are on the scene and present what really happened without any approved access and at risk of physical assault and arrest.
But they are all part of 2025’s free press. I actually believe @MarkJCarney not only knows this but respects this. He showed that with @ezralevant @OzraeliAvi in @Davos — He’s been fine so far with the ones in Ottawa (no one has been roughed up and he does not have to answer their questions but has shown to acknowledge they are fellow humans).
But if this release about press freedom is really code for the government getting to decide who is acceptable and who isn’t, then press freedom is not what it’s about. We will soon see. Time will tell.
