Imagine, if you will, that Malaysian-born Minister of Foreign Affairs Penny Wong didn't care to save a white Australian guy stranded in southeast Asia.
This would never have happened in the old times. A guy getting abused like this would have been a stain on the dignity of all Australians.
Not just Australians, they killed Britons and New Zealanders too. Crickets from their governments.
USA is the exception rather than the rule for protecting their citizens abroad, and that's an outcome of still being an empire scale world power.
