I mean... blame Japan's stupid anime art style and making them look as non Asian (or even human for that matter) as possible? Not all of it is like that of course, but a great deal of it is. Be careful what you ask for, because if you want actual real world representation of the big eye abominations you're gonna have to get real freaks of nature.
