I'm not an American, though I do enjoy firearms for both hunting and recreational shooting, one thing which always surprises foreigners about Finland is that we actually have a very positive gun culture, shooting, gunsmithing, hunting, you name it, I think the only two countries in Europe with slightly higher guns per capita are Serbia and Bosnia or Montenegro, I just remember it's both Balkan countries (very based). In that situation, if I hear a noise I'm grabbing the shotgun, hard to miss with, very destructive, and contrary to popular belief about them being for very cqc, can blast a burglar subhuman from a surprising distance.
However if you were say just on your property doing some work but still want to be armed, I'd pick the handgun, sure you can keep your shotgun in close reach just in case someone wants to meet God early, but it's much more easier and practical to just holster a pistol, it's light, doesn't get in the way, you're also outside on your property, personally on mine I'd need quite some range so arguably a shotgun wouldn't suffice, you can move around and do work without even noticing it's on your person, and with good training it's probably the most effective scum remover for how lightweight it is.
It really is amazing; even with all the fearmongering over black rifles, and the misconceptions that stem from that...I don't think any gun is more misunderstood at large than the shotgun. I blame video games. I get it; it was a balancing issue decision. But video game shotguns are nothing like actual shotguns, and since a lot of people have way more access to video games than guns, they end up thinking that's what a shotgun is.
