If nothing else this is the kind of stuff that can help mainstream 2A and self defense going forward. Also is an excellent illustration of how shit a defensive situation is, cause almost nothing went "right", but the outcome ended well.
The best weapon for home defense is whatever you have one hand.
The second best is a weapon you love and love to shoot, and do so alot, so you're proficient and comfortable with it should shit go down.
The third best, imho, is a cheap yet reliable AR. It's easier to become proficient with, and you're not going to be crying to the bank if the cops need to keep it as 'evidence' for whatever fucked up reason. Plus you can get a reasonable silencer for hearing protection you can quickly remove before the cops come.
Pistol has a drawback in that you need to practice alot more to become good at it, red dots are expensive for pistols(and some difficult to get), and you really don't want to have to hand over a thousand-plus pistol to the cops for the evidence locker.
Shotguns are nice, but limited in terms of ammo. And also expensive, unless you're going turkish, which is chancy.
And if you're an absolute goddamn maniac, get an AR-10, because 308 rounds will solve any problem you point them at.
