It has absolutely been exaggerated. The 6 million number was not from the camps, nor was it just jews. That number includes the deaths of civilians murdered across eastern europ, which included jews, gypsies and other groups. Murders that both soviets and germans participated in.

I have a distinct memory of being taught the death toll was 4 million Jews and 2 million others at some point in school.
